Buzzing with FOOD

Weekends…how I look forward to each week. This weekend when my dad asked me what to have for dinner, I immediately answered "Bak Kut Teh"!!

It has been quite some time since we last had it, so we went to a shop nearby to try it out.

This shop is located off Jln Abdullah Ariff. It can be seen just as you are passing by the main road to Air Itam.

The shop used to be very small but now they have extended to the next house and with air-cond installed too.

We ordered 3-person servings and with an extra dish of vegetables.

garlic and chillies                                         yam rice and "yew char koey"

vegetable (boiled and added with soya sauce, sesame oil and topped with meat floss)

And the main dish….

Inside: pork meat, meat balls, vege, mushrooms, corn, tau kuah.

Overall, the taste was ok, but not great. The soup has enough herbal taste and sweetness in it. The yam rice was nice though as they added dried shrimps to it.

Any better "Bak Kut Teh" stalls/shop to recommend??

Have been missing for many days hence did not update. The weekend was hectic but nevertheless very fulfilling. Its just hard to express that kind of feeling everytime I join such activity and go to that place and be together with the people there. I’m not going to post here in detail about where I go/what I did, will post it elsewhere soon.

Just updates on the earlier weekend, while the Muslim people were celebrating Hari Raya. We, among our family were making full use of the holiday and call for a get-together for…what else? STEAMBOAT lor..

Some of the ingredients for the night

cuttlefish (looks purple-ish??)                 the ever famous - big prawns

                 fish in slices                                   meatballs

                  fishballs                                          crabsticks

                     seaweed                                     vegetables

                   mushrooms                                       noodles

Of course not forgetting the dumplings (which was all gone within a few blinks) and the soup base (those at the bottom are mushrooms)

Everything’s ready, soup is boiling, tummys are growling, saliva are dripping, so let’s steam-the-boat!!

Looks colorful with all the different ingredients all mixed into 1 pot. Of course to feed more hungry tummys, we prepared some side dishes

                                  Fried belacan chicken (yummy~)

                                  Stir-fried Assam Prawns (double yummy~)

Why is steamboat popular? Maybe because it’s easy to prepare, and everybody can participate in. Well, there’s no need for a special reason to gather the family for a good dinner and meet-up, right??

I really hope we can continue doing this often. Nowadays everyone is just so buzy and seldom come over to my grandma’s house. Her face just brightens up when some who have not been visiting for quite some time comes and eat together. To bring more happiness to her, that’s my hope!!

Oh yea, after that weekend, I took vegetarian food for three days (Nine Kings Festival). Mostly eat at home, cooked by mum, as the vegetarian food sold outside is cut-throat expensive!!

Then another weekend arrived where I went down to KL. No details for that here (but elsewhere emoticon)

Year end is coming up. Any plans?

Mention the word ‘wedding dinner’, most will be happy to see 2 individuals who have met their love partner and are going to share part of their life with the other half through the power of the ring that connects them as a symbol of love!

Another excitement is to savour the environment of meeting up with family, relatives and friends and of course the dinner itself. Wedding receptions in hotels are usually served in a grand and unique style. The dishes served are also carefully choosen beforehand to ensure the invitees end up happy too after giving a big fat ‘angpow’ to the parents of the couple.

Well, I’ve just attended a wedding reception of a relative last Saturday in Hotel Equatorial, Bukit Jambul, Penang, hence all the sayings above. It has been a long time since I’ve attended such dinners.

Food tasting is part of my mission there as well, so here’s a look at what was served (photos look yellow-ish due to the lighting and my under-performed camera) and my comment;

clockwise: salad prawn, pai tee, fried dumpling, stir fried chicken cubes

First up, as usual, is the combination of hot and cold dish. Nothing spectacular about it. The prawn tasted bland but the pai tee was good, with mango kerabu filling inside topped with thai-style anchovies. The dumpling and chicken taste normal.

Next is the braissed shark’s fin soup with sea cucumber. Credits to the chef. It’s good, very thick with full of ingredients and the taste is just right. At least they are not ‘kiamsiap’ with the ingredients. Thumbs up!!

The next dish was Steamed Chinese Herbal Chicken. The chicken meat is very soft and tender as it’s steamed for quite a few hours. The meat s filled with herbal taste and it’s quite tasteful with the sweet gravy poured over it. There’s also mushrooms added to this dish.

Up next, is Braised Broccoli with Pacific Clams and Dried Sole Fish. The speciality in this dish is of course the clams and the sole fish. Taste just ok, not bad. Abit surprising is they added bird’s egg to the dish as well.

Deap Fried Tiger Prawns with Wunan Sauce is served soon after. The sauce is sweet and slightly spicy. How is Wunan sauce suppose to taste like anyway??

Next, Steamed Snapper with light soya sause. Nothing special about this dish, the style in steaming is what mom always do at home. They added some toufu with fish eggs by the side of the dish (top right corner in pic). The fish is fresh while the meat is smooth and sweet.

Almost coming to an end, the Fried Rice with Chicken Floss and Anchovies was served. The rice is fried with tiny anchovies and fish cakes and topped with chicken floss and fried onions. Taste fine.

And finally, the dessert, Honeydew with Longan Sago. Taste refreshing. The ice is blended together with the honeydew and hence taste very good and not watery. Longan and sago adds to the sweet taste of this dessert.

Overall, the food was ok but one thing was the service. In such hotel of multiple star rating, the waiter who served us was way too bad. The servings alway came late (other table has finish half the dish while we were still waiting for it to come), the way he serves was also bad and wasteful (the table got some share of the food as well).

Anyway, the night was lively with the live band and cheeky MC cum singer who came up with several ways to keep the loving and happy atmosphere alive.

Congratulations to the couple!!

Another birthday post?? Well, Sept-Oct period seems to be full of birthdays reminders in my schedule notebook. So, here’s another birthday shoutout!

It was Dad’s birthday 2 days ago. Bought him some cake from secret recipe and treat him to a dinner. Nothing special but just some family time together with my parents (since bro is nowhere near home)

The dinner we had was from some new seafood restaurant located in Sungai Ara, Pg. Food is not very nice, portion is very small…so I’m not gonna show pictures or say anything else about it since there’s nothing worth mentioning.

Anyway, here’s the cake….

marble cheesecake

I didn’t take a photo of the other slice of tiramisu cake as it didn’t look so pleasing to the camera, but taste ok.
