I guess those of us brought up in the Northern states such as Penang has a liking for spicy or hot food. Maybe it’s because we are closer to the Thai borders which has some of the most fearsome Tom Yams and Keng Soms.

We decided to try out the Thai buffet promoted by Prontip Thai Restaurant in Peel Road (located inside Yesterday Club)

Most of the food are normal ones you will find in ‘chu char’ restaurants, except that they cook it in Thai style.

L-R: Brinjal, Spring roll, Bayam dipped in flour and deep fried, fish in sour and spicy sauce, chicken satay.

Of course how can Tom Yam be missing from the list of food….that’s the main attraction of the whole line of buffet spread!!

We added some vermicelli into it. It has few types of mushrooms in it, tomatoes (lots of it) and the spices and chillies to bring out the fragrance and taste. To us, the tom yam was too sour…way too sour till we had to take warm water and add into our bowl. Spicyness is ok…but the sourness is a let down!!! Being a Thai restaurant, expectations were high for a savouring Tom Yam but unfortunately……

Another round of food….I just love the deep-fried vege (although it’s really unhealthy since it’s deep-fried and nutrients from it would be gone in the frying). It’s so crispy…same goes with the brinjal, it was fried then stir-fried again with some chilli.

The other two types of food I didn’t take earlier was omelette (with something inside…darn, I can’t remember. Some kind of vege I think) and ‘kerabu’ or mango salad.

There’s also belacan chicken which is fried every now and then and brought out to the buffet line…so when ever you take it, it’s hot and crispy.

We ended our buffet lunch with some fruits and Thai dessert

What is this called? It has some jelly-like cubes and strings served in coconut milk. Something similar to the water chestnut dessert.

The buffet lunch was priced at RM 12.90 (weekends) and RM 10.90 (weekdays). You can also order ala-carte from their menu, which definitely has more variety than those on the buffet line!! While we were there, a few tables of patrons ordered some ala-carte to go with rice and boy…it was more tempting than what I had. But for this buffet price, what’s there to expect, right??

Another Thai (and Vietnamese) style kind of food I had was in IndoChine in Queensbay Mall (highest floor). That one was really good…(even much better when we didn’t have to pay for the 7-dish meal). Among the dish ordered was seafood curry served in a coconut, steamed fish with thai soup, green curry, stir-fried asparagus and seafood tom yam soup. But too bad I didn’t have my camera with me and I don’t think I will go back there again anytime soon because it’s quite an expensive place to dine in.

So where can we find nice and not-so-expensive Thai food in Penang???
