Invited Review @ Hot Wok (Part I)
Hot Wok
Located at Burmah Road (map in Part II), this outlet used to be situated at Tanjong Tokong, opposite Subaidah Mamak Corner. It prides itself in serving authentic Nyonya and local cuisine. Not only locals but also tourist patron this restaurant to savour a variety of delicacies. This outlet is managed by a mother and son team (only two cooks to maintain the quality) of Sally and Kelvyn and assisted by a few waiters and waitresses. They have another outlet at Damansara (PJ) and is operated by the father and son team. What a family of business-talents and good cooks!!

They ought to get thumbs up for maintaining this pre-war house and also managing to obtain many other antiques to decorate this outlet into a lovely and surreal environment of the past. I believe the young and old Penangites will enjoy and appreciate looking at all the old items, photographs, and decoration adorning this outlet.

Doesn’t it look like some 1970s coffee shop? A nostalgic and historic impression.

These chairs reminds me of my grandparent’s house. (Wooden chairs salvaged from the coffee shop they own last time, we still have about 10 of these and a dozen of antique square chairs adorned with pearls/marbles which was partly destroyed by Japanese soldiers.)

There’s also certain part of the outlet which is setup to have the modern restaurant look.

Lots of antiques on display. An abacus (suih pua - Hokkien, suànpán - Mandarin) is cleverly reused as a front deco of the menu rack.
The earliest known written documentation of the Chinese abacus dates to the 14th century AD.[14]
The top of the abacus is called the heaven and the bottom is called the earth.[15]
The Chinese abacus, known as the suànpán, is typically 20 cm tall and comes in various widths depending on the operator. It usually has more than seven rods. There are two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads each in the bottom for both decimal and hexadecimal computation.

Plates, vase/urn and grandfather clock

Some historic photos and antique cupboard
